Children from Brecknock Primary School in Camden made a documentary and recycled clothing to put on a dazzling fashion show for World Environment Day.

Old comic books were turned into bright jewellery, cereal boxes and newspapers became bags, and clothing was cut, sewn and decorated to bring it back to life.  The recycling activities were part of a challenge by London-based BAM Construction which is building new facilities for the University of Arts London at King's Cross Central.

The children, aged 4 to 11, conducted an off-the-scale decibel reading and heard how year 4 children had tested tidal power, while the team from BAM was on hand to set out how it was protecting the environment during the massive redevelopment.

The environmental showcase was put on by the children at Brecknock and conducted before an audience of classmates, school governors, a University College London lecturer and the BAM site team, who also donated a mini solar panel to help in experiments about renewable energy.

Sue Ladipo, Head Teacher of Brecknock Primary School, said, "This was a wonderful opportunity for us to work in partnership with our local community. The BAM site team were able to see how creative and innovative Brecknock children can be. The children enjoyed the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and achievement. At Brecknock we are learning the importance of looking after the world we live in and are enthusiastically facing the challenges and opportunities of the future."

BAM’s Louise Jermak said, "One of the pleasures in helping a busy and diverse area like Camden renew and regenerate itself is the opportunity that gives you to know the community you work in and to play a small part in looking after the environment. Our success in doing that in this industry has never been more important."

BAM’s own environmental commitments in delivering the new campus for the University of Arts London will see a minimum of 70% of all waste diverted from landfill.
