Formal Opening of the Construction Skill Centre
The formal opening of the King's Cross Construction Skills Centre took place on Monday 23rd March 2009 and was conducted by Richard Barnes, Deputy Mayor of London and Lord Young, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Skills and Apprenticeships.
The Centre was built by Carillion as part of the Section 106 Agreement with the London Borough of Camden and will train up to 150 Apprentices a year from the local area to NVQ level 2 qualification.
Their training will be carried out together with the four main contractors at King’s Cross Central; BAM Construction, BAM Nuttall, Carillion and Kier.
The Centre is run by the London Borough of Camden. Carillion will be the training providers. Three main courses will be taught; Carpentry and Joinery, Brick Laying and Civil Engineering (Groundworks).
Highgate Apprentice Ben Burke 17, fresh from work experience on the Olympic site, said that the scheme allowed him to follow in the footsteps of his father, who was a carpenter.
Robert Evans, Director of Argent (the Asset Manager for King's Cross Central), said: "This new training facility positions King's Cross Central as a centre for excellence providing work based learning. We are creating an exciting new part of London and this centre will make a vital contribution both to the training of Londoners in construction skills and delivering significant local regeneration benefits."
