The skyline is changing at King’s Cross ...
On the 6th January 2009 the first of three tower cranes was erected behind the Granary building within the Eastern Goods Yard. This large green crane is tangible evidence that work is well under way by BAM on the construction of the University of the Arts, London’s new campus building which will be ready to accept its first intake of 6,500 staff and students in September 2011.
This first tower crane is 40m high, has a 65m jib and can lift 16 tonnes. The second tower crane was erected on the 12th February and is even taller and a third crane will be erected in March 2009 to help construct the five storey university building and the adjoining studios and retail outlets in the east and west Transit sheds.
Scaffolding now covers the front of the Granary building and incorporates a powerful hoist for passengers and equipment. It will assist in the upgrading of this large heritage building that includes the refurbishment of the existing windows, a replacement roof incorporating a lightwell and extensive cleaning and repair of the façade brickwork.
